THE RESIDENCY PROGRAM: The General Practice Residency Program at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center is a 12 month training program, fully accredited by the American Dental Association. There are five positions available for each academic year. The residents are exposed to a full range of current dental treatment modalities. On staff are attending dentists board certified in Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Periodontics, and Endodontics. In addition, attendings have received advanced training in Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics, Implant Dentistry and Cosmetic dentistry.
Core Lectures: Tuesday through Friday a one hour 7:45 AM lecture is held.Guest lecturers and residents are invited to speak about various medical/surgical techniques. Topics included are: pre-prosthetic (check the spelling of “pre-prosthetic” on the OMFS page, please.) surgery, reconstruction/bone grafting, soft tissue management, trauma, dentoalveolar surgery, TMJ surgery, facial/ dentoalveolar implant surgery, cosmetics, infections, pharmacology, anesthesia, medical management. Three lunchtime lectures per week are given by our GP attending dentists. The topics include: Restorative Dentistry, Fixed Prosthetics, Removable Prosthetics, Implant Dentistry, Endodontics, Periodontics, Pedodontics, Orthodontics, Cosmetic Dentistry. In addition, our “Lunch & Learn” lecture series is comprised of 3-5 lectures per month given by invited guest-lecturers on diverse topics including practice management, finances, laboratory procedures, dental product manufacturer’s representatives, insurance coverage and “the business of dentistry”.
Grand Rounds: Two hour Grand Rounds are conducted weekly by the OMFS Chief Resident. All pre-operative and post-operative cases for the week are discussed. Attendance by all residents is required.
Research: Monthly research update conference is held. New research topics are discussed. It is mandatory for every graduating resident to complete a
research project.
Orthognathic Conference: Biweekly Orthognathic conference is held in conjunction with the Orthodontic and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery attendings. Predictions are made using hand tracings of Lateral Cephalometric x-ray, and utilizing the Dolphin imaging software.
Journal Club: Weekly journal club meetings are held. Articles are selected from peer reviewed journals and discussions are held including residents
and attendings.
Head, Neck and Oral Pathology: A formal, ten hour Oral Pathology lecture series is conducted during the academic year by the Oral Pathology attending. Residents are trained to read histological slides and to work up differential diagnoses.
Morbidity and Mortality: A quarterly, detailed review of all negative results in patient care is performed by the chief OMFS resident. This allows
us to learn from complications and errors, to modify behavior and judgment based on previous experiences, and to prevent repetition of errors leading to better treatment outcomes (please check your content in this sentence).
Bone Plating Seminar: Bone Plating seminars are arranged to teach mechanics and physiology of fractures and plating systems.
GP residents complete rotations through the departments of: Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Anesthesia.
Within the Dental Department, our residents complete rotations in Orthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Pedodontics. During the
Pediatric and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Dental rotations residents will perform numerous procedures on patients who are under general anesthesia
or conscious sedation.
